The Cleveland State University Student Chapter of A&WMA is once again participating in the WERC international environmental design contest and fund raising activities.
WERC's Environmental Design Contest is a unique event that brings together industry, government, and academia in the search for improved environmental solutions.
The student teams design solutions for real-world problems for which industry and government are looking for answers. Fully operational bench-scale solutions are presented to judges who are experts in their fields and represent government, industry, and academia. The teams must prepare four different presentations: written, oral, poster, and bench-scale model.

Dr. Ashok Kumar's students participated in a one-day research symposium on Oct. 29, 2003. The symposium was sponsored by the Ohio Air Quality Development Authority (OAQDA) to promote interaction among air pollution researchers and students. A web site was established for a continuing effort at: www.eng.utoledo.edu/~akumar/OAQDA/Home.htm
The OAQDA main webpage is www.ohioairquality.org
The Northern Ohio Chapter of the Air and Waste Management Association has tried to reach out to environmental students and prospective environmental students in the following ways.
A. NOC members volunteer as judges at the annual Ohio Science and Engineering Fair, which is held every March.
B. NOC has inititated a survey to determine what environmental programs are offered at Northern Ohio Universities and Colleges. The survey was e-mailed to all identifiable colleges and universities within the NOC territory. Significant followup efforts will be necessary to complete the survey and to develop a database of the responses.
C. The Northern Ohio Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association is actively seeking additional Faculty Advisors from Northern Ohio colleges and universities to oversee student chapters at their respective schools. Active student chapters are presently at Cleveland State University and the University of Toledo but the Northern Ohio Chapter of A&WMA would like to expand the number of active student chapters in Northern Ohio. The Northern Ohio Chapter supports Faculty Advisors by paying the yearly A&WMA membership dues and processing of applications for student chapter membership with the national A&WMA. Advantages to student include: eligibility for local chapter and national scholarships, opportunities to network with environmental professionals in Northern Ohio and partial payment of annual A&WMA student dues. Students can also attend Chapter events at a reduced fee to cover the lunch fee only.
D. NOC offers scholarships to students at schools with Student Chapters.
E. Environmental Resource Guides are a useful tool for schools or
educational programs interested in stressing environmental education. The guides are written at varying levels to educate elementary through high school students on science and the environment.
